INTERNATIONALIZATION OF UNIVERSITIES

Over the last two decades, universities around the world have been under growing pressure to respond to rapidly evolving social, technical, economic, and political forces emerging from both the immediate and the wider post-industrial external environment. Academic standards and processes at higher educational institutions are often driven by the way they closely collaborate and interact with foreign Universities. The establishment of functional collaborations and partnerships with several of the world’s top Universities improves academic excellence and technology development. Such partnerships enhance and promote joint research, student and staff exchange, mentoring, curriculum enrichment, and access to advanced international pedagogies and laboratories. Such collaborations enhance networking and result in syllabus enhancement processes, access to proven teaching pedagogies, and templates for infrastructure on the ground. They also provide faculty, students, and researchers with resources for international cooperation and active participation in multidisciplinary research projects. Internationalizing the student body, international recruiting, exchange, and support services call for a critical review of the possible advantages and challenges of developing world-class universities in Africa. This paper explores the University as a significant part of the globalization process and addresses the purpose, the elements, and the role of internationalization in promoting the University's search to take advantage of globalization and produce graduates with global skills. The advantages and challenges of the internationalization of universities are also under consideration.
